As it got later they all departed en masse so possibly I could try going even later?

Definitely better to go later, maybe during the dinner hour - except you will be wanting to be home for your dinner then! A quandary!!
I love the colours of your latest painting. No easy answers for your prom visit and it may get worse as the restrictions relax and tourism and holidays can begin again. Maybe you will have to walk carrying a sign saying please keep your distance!!
